Correspondence between Roger de Bussy-Rabutin and Mme de Sévigné

Sotheby’s has announced details of its Book Week, a four part global sale series across its Paris, London, and New York locations. The lots feature notable works across categories including important printed and manuscript Americana, fine examples of literature spanning continents and centuries, illustrations, and musical manuscripts.

The first is Livres et Manuscrits — dont des bibliothèques Alain Schimel et Hubert Heilbronn which runs until July 4 in Paris. This features a varied array from the 15th to 20th centuries mingling first editions, manuscripts, and modern illustrated books including:

  • the first book printed in Greek characters published by Alde Manuce
  • the autographed copy of correspondence between Roger de Bussy-Rabutin and Mme de Sévigné
  • the rare first edition of The Three Musketeers and a precious Tauromaquia by Picasso.
  • letters and precious editions by Stendhal, from his first texts to an exemplary annotated copy of his Histoire de la peinture en Italie.
  • books with interesting provenances by Cocteau, Apollinaire, and various Surrealists, as well as a manuscript copy and Romantic editions of Les Mémoires de Saint-Simon

In New York, the July 20 Fine Books and Manuscripts, Including Americana. Part 1 (online/absentee bidding from July 6) brings together a range of items including a fine copy of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, and original artwork from Ludwig Bemelmans Madeline. On the same dates is Fine Books and Manuscripts, Including Americana. Part 2 featuring a fine single-owner sequence of 19th century literature, boasting exceptional copies of Little Women, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, and Moby-Dick. Meanwhile, the Books, Manuscripts and Music from Medieval to Modern auction will be held on July 4 in London.
