Lichtenstein Tops $5.5 Million Art Auction at Heritage

DALLAS—Water Lilies with Cloud, 1992, presented as part of a mini-retrospective of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, sold for $341,000 in Heritage Auctions' $5.5 million Modern & Contemporary Art Signature® Auction in Dallas. The Nov. 8 auction offered career highlights from the likes of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana as well as a rare early engraving from Pablo Picasso. 

"We were quite pleased to see knowledgeable buyers and collectors find what they were looking for at Heritage," said Frank Hettig, Director of Modern & Contemporary Art at Heritage. "As expected, we saw strong prices among familiar works as well as a great deal of interest in late 20th century abstract and Pop artists."

The auction's more than 50 prints and editions by Lichtenstein included Water Lilies - Blue Lily Pads, 1992, which sold for $149,000 and Reflections on Girl (from the Reflection series), 1990, which sold for $125,000. Reflections on Crash (from the Reflections series), 1990, brought $100,000 and Sweet Dreams Baby! (from 11 Pop Artists portfolio), 1965, sold for $93,750.

Yield Brother Frank, 1991, by Robert Indiana, more than tripled its estimate to end at $293,000, following interest from five bidders. 

Several works by Andy Warhol received multiple bids as Moonwalk (two works), 1987, sold for $233,0000, $ (Quadrant), 1982, sold for $185,000 and Eva Mudocci (After Munch), 1984, a unique screenprint, brought $81,250.

Pablo Picasso's Le Repas Frugal (from La Suite des Saltimbanques), 1904, printed from the edition of 250 by Ambroise Vollard, sold for $112,500.

Hollywood, 1968, but Ed Ruscha: Realized: $87,500.

Man in the Moon, 1995, by Lui Liu: Realized: $68,750.

Untitled, 1950, by Alexander Calder: Realized: $56,250.

Quatres Lithographies (four works), 1986, by Willem de Kooning: Realized: $53,125.
