Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea Location Photos to Auction
May 1956, Ernest Hemingway and a 730lb Marlin
A collection of original 1956 photographs and negatives of Ernest Hemingway during the shooting of The Old Man and the Sea at Cabo Blanco, Peru, will go under the hammer tomorrow at Britannic Auctions.
The black-and-white photographs from the private archive of Warner Bros photographer Mac Julian document Hemingway, Mary Hemingway, members of the production party and the fishing expedition surrounding The Old Man and the Sea. They appear to have remained privately held and unpublished since the 1950s.
Mac 'Julian' Saugstad spent more than three decades behind the scenes of Hollywood productions, creating key-set, portrait, publicity and location photographs that helped shape the public image of the films he documented including The Adventures of Robin Hood, To Have and Have Not, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Key Largo.
Highlights include:
- an original photograph showing Ernest Hemingway, Mary Welsh Hemingway and members of the Cabo Blanco fishing and film expedition posed beneath an enormous 730lb black marlin associated with Hemingway’s friend Elicio Argüelles
- a group of three photographs of Hemingway inside the tackle room of the Cabo Blanco Fishing Club examining fishing equipment,
- s participation in the expedition, combining preparations ashore, a major marlin catch and the filming of fishing activity at sea, and seated barefoot in a fighting chair with a heavy rod and reel across his lap
- an archive of 40 original 35mm contact-proof strips, containing approximately 270 sequential exposures chronicling the expedition as it unfolded, including preparations aboard the fishing vessels, active big-game fishing, motion-picture filming, the handling of heavy tackle, a large marlin at the surface, the securing of the catch and the immediate aftermath aboard the boat; Hemingway appears throughout the principal sequences,
- a group of four original photographic contact sheets documenting the production of The Old Man and the Sea involving Hemingway and the film's star Spencer Tracy
