Three books by John Dos Passos and finely bound by Hazel Dreis will go under the hammer at PBA Galleries' October 15 Fine Bindings auction.
The mixed set (New York , Harcourt, Brace and Company , 1930-1936) with inscriptions on the title page from Dos Passos for Chester Arthur and Esther Arthur includes The 42nd Parallel, 1919, and The Big Money.
Chester Arthur, grandson of U.S. President Chester A. Arthur, was a bohemian involved in radical politics, the gay rights movement, and the beat scene. In the 1930s in Pismo Beach, California, he established an art and literature commune publishing the Dune Forum magazine. Hazel Dreis was a San Francisco bookbinder who worked for the Grabhorn Press and designed Dune Forum.
Each volume includes the Arthur bookplate. The estimate is $1,000-$1,500.
