First Edition Annotated Scripts to Auction for Charity

Annotated scripts by playwrights including Tom Stoppard, Caryl Churchill, Winnie Holzman, Jez Butterworth, Richard Curtis, David Hare will go under the hammer in September to raise funds for refugee artists.

They are among 50 leading playwrights who have donated annotated first and special editions of movie, musical and play texts for the Out Of The Margins September 15 - October 6 sale run by the Good Chance Theatre in collaboration with the Auction Collective and Christie's. A selection will be on display at Christie’s Auction house in London September 20 -28.

Lots will include a first edition hardback of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child annotated by screenwriter Jack Thorne, and a rare boxed first edition of Leopoldstadt by Tom Stoppard who commented: “Good Chance has been inspirational for years past, and this auction in aid of refugee artists will ripple outwards for years to come.”

Highlights include:


  • Wole Soyinka’s first edition of his The Bacchae adaption from Euripides

  • Musical texts including Jerry Springer: The Opera (Stewart Lee), Wicked (Winnie Holzman), Mean Girls (Tina Fey), and Matilda (Dennis Kelly)

  • a rare edition of The Vagina Monologues by V, printed for the first ever V Day event in 1998

  • the screenplay of Love, Actually by Richard Curtis and an unseen play by Curtis written last year

Proceeds from the auction will fund Good Chance Theatre’s work supporting refugee artists in the UK. Since it was established nearly a decade ago, it has provided 250 refugee artists with support in the UK and placed 750 artists from refugee and migrant backgrounds in training and employment.
