Fine Manuscript and Printed Americana
Sale N10301

In what is now a tradition, Books and Manuscripts will be joining our colleagues across other departments in celebrating Americana Week. Our sale is rich in significant and intriguing materials, both printed and manuscript. The auction features an outstanding selection of historical letters and documents from Joseph Rubinfine American Historical Autographs, including an extensive group of letters by George Washington and other material related to the American Revolution. A number of scarce handbills, broadsides, pamphlets, and ephemera (including a couple of examples of early American erotica) come from the private collection of Bailey Bishop. Among many other varied highlights are a scarce New York handbill reporting early news of the Boston Tea Party; a very fine copy of McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America; Alonso de Molina’s Aqui comiença un vocabulario en la lengua Castellana y Mexicana, the first edition of the first dictionary and indeed one of the earliest books to be printed in the Americas; a collection of some 1,900 British Parliamentary Acts, including many dealing with the British American Colonies; and two Black Ship Scrolls with provenance from the family of Commodore Matthew Perry.
