Successful Spring Auction for New Orleans Auction Galleries

(New Orleans, LA) — April 22, 2013 — New Orleans Auction Galleries (NOAG), the premier auction house of the American South, hosted an impressive three-day sale held April 19-21, 2013 with 8 pieces achieving world record prices with many others garnering exceptional results.


Important highlights from the auction include a large Shearwater Pottery vase decorated by Walter Anderson, which sold for a world record price of $31,980; William Tolliver’s oil on canvas titled, “Man in Blue, Playing a Guitar,” reached a world record price of $23,370; and Pedro Friedeberg’s Giltwood “Hand Chair,” also achieved an unprecedented price of $17,835.

The fine estate jewelry session was very well attended with several pieces drawing considerable attention from gallery, phone, and internet bidders. A stunning fourteen-karat white gold and diamond necklace composed of ninety-nine round-cut diamonds sold for $20,910 and a pair of fourteen-karat white gold and diamond earrings reached a sale price of $9,532.


Session III on Sunday, April 21 featured “Living Art,” a unique collection of original works from 13 iconic New Orleans artists donated to benefit WLAE-TV public broadcasting station. Artists in this special session included: Alex Beard, Raine Bedsole, Dr. Bob, George Dunbar, Mitchell Gaudet, Alan Gerson, Thomas Mann, Steve Martin, James Michalopoulos, Terrence Osborne, George Rodrigue, Hunt Slonem, Carlos Zervigon. The impressive collection filled the room with excitement and sold for over $70,000 for WLAE. James Michalopoulos’s “7th Ward Cinderella” sold for a world record price of $15,375 and George Rodrigue’s ink on metal print, titled “Swamp Dogs #2,” achieved a world record price for a multiple at $11,992. NOAG is donating proceeds from the sale of the “Living Art” collection to WLAE.

 

NOAG’s Spring Estates Auction also featured William Spratling and William Faulkner’s Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles: A Gallery of Contemporary New Orleans,” an extremely rare book of sketches of local characters in New Orleans from the early 20th century generously donated by Stephanie Durant to benefit the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The book sold for an impressive $16,605 and was one of the most notable lots offered in Session I. NOAG donated proceeds from the sale to the Ogden Museum and looks forward to collaborating with the Ogden Museum on future projects.
