National Book Auctions, December 7 Sale Highlights

[ITHACA, NY] National Book Auctions, located in Ithaca, NY, announces the launch of their next auction catalog.

Book, Art and Ephemera Auction—Basquiat, Medical, Hemingway, etc.

This catalog features rare, antique and decorative books as well as select additions of ephemera, artwork and collectibles.  The art pieces are led by original works that are signed, Basquiat and Lebasque, alongside antique woodblock prints and original paintings from Japan.   Highlighted are private collections including author-signed modern literature, antique medical, and collectible children's books. The ephemera lots offer a fine collection of antique Americana and railroad subject matter.

Antique and rare books in this catalog feature numerous titles.  Among the earliest examples are the 1679 printing of "Historiarum Libri ix Novem Musarum Nominibus Inscripti," with a fold-out map, the 1697 first edition of "Letters of the Cardinal-Duke de Richelieu .... to Lewis XIII," and "Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera," printed in 1691.  Other scarce titles include the 1926 first edition of Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises," the 1904 limited, leather-bound federal edition of "The Works of Benjamin Franklin," produced in twelve volumes, and a special association copy of Catherine Beecher's 1842 "Treatise of Domestic Economy," signed by the author's sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Several pleasing collections will also be featured.  A fine selection of antique decorative sets includes works by celebrated authors such as George Eliot, Jane Austen, Alexander Dumas, William Shakespeare, Sir Walter Scott, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and many others.  Antique medical titles will be offered including the first edition of Ashhurst's "International Encyclopaedia of Surgery," printed over the years 1881-1886, in six volumes with chromolithographs and woodcuts, and decorative antique volumes of "Wood's Medical Library."   We are continuing our work with a large collection of author-signed modern and recent literature and this catalog includes group lots and individual titles such as a rare signed Italian-language copy of Hemingway's "Morte nel Pomeriggio" ("Death in the Afternoon").  Additional collections include antique children's books, railroad, nautical, Americana, cartography, and much more.

Found throughout this catalog are offerings of artwork, ephemera and other collectibles.  The art lots include original paintings signed, Jean-Michel Basquiat, George Stanley, and Henri Lebasque.  Also being offered is a single collection of early American ephemera, including colonial era, focused on Pennsylvania and New York.  Additional ephemera and collectibles lots include antique postcards, magazines, chromolithographs, tobacciana stamps, railroad, travel, original antique correspondence, antique photographs, and other genres.
