An extensive archive of advertising campaigns from Sunkist Growers, Inc. dating from 1917-96 highlights the graphic design section of the sale. The 80 volumes are filled with mounted and tipped-in advertisements, posters and labels from Sunkist comprising a virtual history of 20th Century color printing techniques and design ($6000/9,000). Also related to the agricultural industry in California is Don’t Buy Grapes or Gallo Wine: The Farmworkers Need You Now, a poster from the 1970’s grape boycotts and the farmworkers’ rights movement in which Cesar Chavez was a key figure ($500/800).

Featured in the poster section is Chez Panisse Tenth Birthday by David Lance Goines, a beautiful 4-color offset-printed and signed poster celebrating the 10 th anniversary of Alice Waters’ famed restaurant. This is one of over twenty lots in the sale by the Berkeley based graphic design artist ($300/500).

An interesting silkscreen poster being offered is Deadbolt / White Barons / Harrington Saints at the Uptown in Oakland, CA. Signed by Chuck Sperry it is from his legendary Firehouse Kustom Rockart print works ($200/300).

From the food and drink selections comes The Bar-Tender’s Guide or How to Mix All Kinds of Plain and Fancy Drinks…by Jerry Thomas. Published in 1887, it is the first drink book ever published in the United States and is the codification of what was then an oral tradition of recipes. The Brandy Daisy, Fizz, Flip, and variations of Punch are just a small taste of some of
the recipes offered ($1,000/1,500). A more recent collection of drink recipes is The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks by David A. Embury from 1958. Called “the Escoffier of cocktail books” by its publisher, the book contains hundreds of recipes as well as sections on glassware, bar equipment, and a discussion on bitters ($1200/1800).

There is an extensive golf section in the auction and one notable offering is Scotland’s Gift: Golf by Charles Blair Macdonald. One of 260 copies and signed by the author, it includes the scarce publisher’s slipcase. Macdonald was a pioneer of golf in America, laying out the courses at the Chicago Golf Club, the National on Long Island, and Mid-Ocean at Bermuda. This edition contains 6 color plates, 3 more than the first trade edition ($6,000/9,000).
