Books & Manuscripts Online

Sotheby’s Books and Manuscripts department is delighted to invite participation in our June online timed auction of Fine Books and Manuscripts.

The sale is highlighted by John R. Mott’s 1946 Nobel Peace Prize Medal — awarded for “his creation of a peace-promoting religious brotherhood across national boundaries”. Mott was the long-serving leader of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), a pioneer in the struggle against racial discrimination, a critic of the oppression of colonized peoples, and took part in both World Wars in relief work for prisoners of war.

Sotheby’s is also pleased to present Property of a Gentleman, a collection of 19th century American and British literature in superlative condition and boasting remarkable association copies including the Yeats family's Book of Common Prayer and Oliver Wendell Holmes's copy of Longfellow's New England Tragedies, and particularly fine examples of literary cornerstones such as Thoreau's Walden, and Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Additional sale highlights include literary correspondence ranging from Charles Dickens to Charles Bukowski, one of only 500 true first editions of Herman Melville’s The Whale, a Matisse two page letter with sketches, George Gershwin’s autographed manuscript music score for “Leavin’ for De Promis’ Lan”, and the only know portrait by renowned physicist Richard Feynman — depicting Dabney Zorthian, wife of his art teacher Jirayr Zorthian.
