Important Manuscripts, Continental Books and Music
Sale L19403

The sale contains a calligraphic autograph letter by Mao Zedong written towards the end of the Chinese Civil War, addressed to the journalist Yang Yi (Lot 31). Among the Continental manuscripts (Lots 13-35) are ten very rare letters from 1742-1743 by Carlo Goldoni, by Freud and Einstein, and three autograph poems by Nikolaus Lenau.

There are 62 lots of music (Lots 36-97), including manuscripts by Liszt, Delius and Richard Strauss, an unknown early manuscript of Handel arias and an important “time-capsule” of music and art in Vienna in 1924 (with pieces by Bartók, Berg, Schoenberg, Webern, Kokoschka, Josef Hofmann and around eighty others). There is a decorated love-poem by Robert Schumann to Clara and letters by Berg, Verdi and Puccini, together with a lock of hair given by Beethoven to Anton Halm in 1826, signed photographs of composers and singers, and printed editions by Lassus, Palestrina, Zarlino and Handel.

Included in the collection of books removed from the library at Ombersley Court (Lots 98-134) is a charming Renaissance manuscript of the works of Ovid (Lot 124). The continental books (Lots 135-232) include numerous fine bindings and some early printed works of Jewish interest, as well as early works by Goethe and Schiller and two handsome Russian plate books on hunting and coronations. Of particular note is a first edition of Descartes Discours de la methode in a contemporary binding with continuous English provenance since the seventeenth century (lot 164).
