Details of Rare Book School's Summer 2026 Lecture Series

Rare Book School at the University of Virginia has revealed its public summer lecture series focusing on book history, bibliography, and print culture.

* June 1: The 2026 Kress Foundation Art of the Book in Europe Lecture
Aquatint Travel Books and the Haptic Picturesque with Douglas Fordham, Professor of Art History and Chair, Department of Art, University of Virginia

* June 3: The 2026 Sue Allen Lecture for Women in Book History
“They Can’t Buy It and They Can’t Take It”: Bookish Solidarity in a Time of Institutional Crisis with Heather O’Donnell, Honey & Wax Booksellers 

* June 10: The 2026 Kenneth W. Rendell Endowed Lecture
Women’s Libraries & Their Afterlives with Elizabeth Canning, book collector and Board Member of the Book Club of Washington

* July 6: The 2026 Sol M. and Mary Ann O’Brian Malkin Lecture
From text to .txt: Making Material Messes in a Sloppy World with Matthew Kirschenbaum, Commonwealth Professor of Artificial Intelligence & Professor of English, University of Virginia

* July 8: The 2026 Kenneth Karmiole Endowed Lecture on the History of the Book Trades
Landscapes, Labor, and the Infrastructures of Printed Newspapers with Michael Stamm, Professor of History, Michigan State University 

* July 22: The 2026 NEH-SHARP Living American History in Primary Documents Lecture
Indigenous Agency and Intervention in the Bibliographical Record with Mike Kelly, Head, Archives & Special Collections, Amherst College

The free talks begin at 5.30 m ET. Each lecture will be followed by a reception in UVA’s Edgar Shannon Library Room 230 (RBS Suite). RBS also offers an option to attend a livestream of the in-person lectures via Zoom.
