Lot 7: [Burton (Captain Sir Richard Francis)], The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night. London, 1897. Reserve: $4,000. Translated from Arabic by Captain Sir R. F. Burton K.C.M.G. F.R.G.S. &c. &c. &c.

This collection of Middle Eastern folktales, known in Arabic as Alf Laylah wa-Laylah (أَلْفُ لَيْلَةٍ وَلَيْلَةٌ), originated during the Islamic Golden Age. Commonly referred to in English as The Arabian Nights, following its first English edition (c.1706–1721), Burton's version is one of two unabridged and unexpurgated English translations from the 1880s and remains a cornerstone of his literary legacy.

Two letters concerning General J.C. Smuts:-

Lot 272: A short typed and signed letter from Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady and wife of American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, to General J.C. Smuts on White House stationery, dated March 13, 1943. Reserve $800.

Lot 274: Typed letter signed by General Jan Smuts dated 24th August 1914, written in his capacity as Minister of Finance in Louis Botha's government and on the official letterhead of the Treasury in Pretoria. The letter, to one R.C. Hawkin in London, concerns the issue of investment in South Africa during the First World War. Reserve $200.
