Histoire Ancienne and Crawford Hours Highlights of Annual Christmas Exhibition

Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books

Histoire Ancienne

During this advent season, Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books will be opening the doors to the gallery at the heart of Basel to exhibit some extremely rare examples of illumination and decoration from the middle ages and the Renaissance. Protected from light and other hazards, the illuminations found in medieval books are the best examples of art from this period. Due to the sensitive nature of these works, they are not often available to be viewed by the public. This years’ highlights include the Histoire Ancienne, a colossal decorated chronicle probably made for the French king at the end of the 14th century, and the Crawford Hours, a tiny devotional masterpiece.

The illuminations found in these medieval books are the best examples of art from this period and treasures like these are rarely seen outside of national collections and impressive private libraries.

Medieval manuscripts, miniatures and early printed books will be on display from December 6 to 16, 10am - 12 noon, and 2pm - 5 pm Monday to Friday at Dr. Jörn Günther Rare Books, Spalenberg 55, 4051 Basel.

Free guided, bespoke tours by experts are possible for the entire duration of the exhibition, please make an appointment by emailinginfo@guenther-rarebooks.com.
