The Folio Society today publishes a new limited edition of the multimillion bestseller and one of the most successful Spanish books ever written, Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s The Shadow of the Wind.

First published in English 20 years ago, this anniversary is marked with a leather-bound volume, blocked in gold and with a gilded top edge, an exact replica of the mysterious book Daniel discovers in the novel. This edition is limited to 500 numbered copies, each signed by the artist Jorge González.

González has recreated Ruiz Zafón’s post-civil-war Barcelona in a series of atmospheric double-page colour illustrations that capture the mystery and intrigue of the story. MariCarmen Bellver, the late author’s wife and literary trustee, said: "I love the illustrations, especially the one that shows the front of the bookstore. It looks very much like the glove store [Alonso] on Carrer Santa Anna in Barcelona which was Carlos' inspiration ... I don't think Carlos mentioned that detail very often, so I am impressed by Jorge's research."

Presented in a cloth-bound slipcase with a design depicting the enchanting interior of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, the illustration of the magical library continues inside the slipcase. This limited edition also includes an exclusive print, as well as a beautifully written new introduction by translator Lucia Graves who first brought this literary phenomenon to an anglophone readership

The limited eiditon is available exclusively from foliosociety.com for £295/$455 from 2pm (UK time) today.
