Some highlights include: a fine work on the venomous snakes of India published in 1874. This folio volume is half bound in snake skin, it contains 28 fine chromolithographic plates, many of the snakes being depicted are actual size (lot 1, reserve $5000). Lot 2 is a splendid set of the late 18th century book on African birds, published in Paris in six large quarto volumes, between 1799 and 1808 – Levaillant: Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d’Afrique (lot 2, reserve $9000). Lot 4 is a scarce work on astronomy written by Sebastianus Theodoricus (1521-1574), teacher of mathematics and medicine at the University of Wittenberg, published in 1564 (lot 4, reserve $2200). For fans of spy thrillers there is an unusual John le Carré item; a pair of unused men's panama sandal's, made for and presented to le Carré as a gift by his hosts in Panama while he was writing his novel, The Tailor of Panama. The sandals were handmade by a native of Panama who engraved le Carré 's name - both his pen name and his real name - David Cornwell - one on each shoe insole. Accompanying the sandals is a 1pp. autograph letter signed and dated by le Carré, Cornwall 20 July '01, written on a le Carré letterhead (lot 5, reserve $1000). There are a wide variety of other interesting items offered.
