Bonhams

Correspondence from actress Julie Christie to Terence Stamp (estimates: £800-£1,000)

A major personal archive of materials belonging to actor Terence Stamp featuring scripts, letters, photographs, costumes, furniture and fashion items will go under the hammer in the June 15-25 Sound & Cinema auction at Bonhams.

“Terence Stamp was not only an incredible actor," said Claire Tole-Moir, Head of Popular Culture at Bonhams, "he was also a defining figure of London in the swinging sixties, emblematic of a certain style and charm. From the photographs of Terry O’Neill, Terence Donovan and David Bailey to his relationships with Jean Shrimpton and Julie Christie, and friendship with Princess Diana, this sale showcases his many sides."

As well as scripts for Superman and Superman II with "TSI" and "TSII" embossed in gold to the cover (estimate: £3,000-£5,000) and Billy Budd (£600-£800), the sale features a number of letters documenting Stamp’s friendship with Princess Diana. Among them is a handwritten 'Thank You' letter (estimate: £1,500 - £2,000) from Princes Diana dated October 17, 1991, thanking Stamp for lunch noting "the risotto was perfect" and continuing "Not many people would take the time and trouble to delve into such a complex situation... Three cheers for Prozac, not the American variety I hasten to add! Lots of love Terence and a huge thank you, from Diana x" together with a postmarked envelope to "Mr T. Stamp G3, The Albany".

Other highlights include:

  • three letters from his supermodel girlfriend Jean Shrimpton, 1964-1987 (estimate £1,000-£1,500)
  • correspondence from actress Julie Christie to Terence Stamp (estimates: £800-£1,000)
  • Terence Stamp's three-piece green-yellow checked suit worn on the film of Thomas Hardy's novel Far from the Madding Crowd, circa 1967 (estimate: £600-£800)
  • a handwritten note from Chita Rivera to Terence with printed kisses (estimate: £300-£500) reminiscing about the time he worked as a stagehand on the 1958 production of West Side Story ("you must say in your book how we all thought you were a 'dish' - including myself. We had a crush on the 'handsome' stagehand")
  • a large collection of original Polaroid photographs detailing the working make-up of stamp's character Bernadette Bassinger during the filming of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1994 (estimate: £2,000-£2,500)
