Framed handpainted Frank Frazetta Captive Princess 1973 paperback cover artwork

Propstore will offer Frank Frazetta’s handpainted Captive Princess at its Spring Entertainment Memorabilia auction later this month.

Taking place March 25–27, the headlining original artwork has an estimate of $500,000-$1m.

Frank Frazetta created Captive Princess as the cover artwork for the 1973 Ace paperback edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The People That Time Forgot.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Frazetta painted covers for Robert E. Howard’s Conan novels and Burroughs’ adventure stories, shaping how readers imagined them and defining the visual identity of sword-and-sorcery fiction.

“Frank Frazetta’s work represents the gold standard of fantasy illustration," said Chuck Costas, Propstore’s Vice President of Business Development. "Captive Princess captures everything collectors seek in a premier Frazetta painting, drama, movement, atmosphere, and that unmistakable sense of power."

In September 2025, Frazetta’s cover painting known as Man Ape for the 1967 Lancer/Ace Conan paperback sold for $13.5m in a single-lot sale at Heritage Auctions' Comics & Comic Art event, a record for an original Frazetta painting.
