Lot 143

THOMAS GAGE (c. 1603-1656)

The English-American his Travail by Sea and Land: OR, A NEW SURVEY OF THE WEST-INDIA’S, …

The progeny of two prominent recusant Roman Catholic families, Thomas Gage, known as Tomas de Santa Maria in religious life, penned the first "book by an English writer - in fact, the first book not by a Habsburg subject - portraying daily life in Spanish America." Originally destined for the Jesuit Order, Gage, while studying in Spain, chose to become a Dominican instead, a choice for which his father disowned him. A complex man, Gage admirably served the indigenous populations of Central America where he was stationed as a missionary.

It was during this period that he published the book offered here, which is fascinating for its astute detail on subjects such as the geography, diet, and the indigenous customs of Central America. Gage spent the greater part of his missionary service in Guatemala, but also visited the southern Yucatan and Honduras, and was able to pick up some of the Mayan language with the help of the natives in the Peten country.
