Berkeley, CA – PBA Galleries announces an auction of Photography and Fine Art - The Jack and Beverly Waltman Collection on April 7th, 2022. The sale consists of 420 lots featuring the magnificent photography collection of Jack and Beverly Waltman. Jack Waltman, an accomplished photographer in his own right, was also a patron to and a collector of many of the 20th century’s finest photographers.

The collection includes signed prints by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston (and family), Imogen Cunningham, George Tice, Judy Dater, Sebastião Salgado, John Sexton, and many others. Several of these photographs are inscribed to Jack and Beverly, whose friendship and support were so vital to the artists represented. Augmenting the Waltman collection are several more examples of 20th century photography from Ansel Adams’ partner in creating the Zone System, Fred A. Archer to Peter Stackpole, Margaret Bourke-White, and Gordon Parks. Other offerings include a section of signed posters by Berkeley artist David Lance Goines, an exhaustive archive of the wood engravings and illustrated books of John DePol, several signed prints by Salvador Dali, some lovely examples of art deco pochoir illustration, and much more.

Among the large collection of works by photographer Ansel Adams that will be available for sale is the Portfolio Three: Yosemite Valley (Estimate: $50,000/80,000) that includes sixteen original photographic prints by Ansel Adams in original portfolio. Each photograph is signed by Ansel Adams on mounting board. They were taken from 1926-59 and printed in 1959. The photograph sizes and orientation vary; it is complete set, one of only 208 produced. Another notable lot from this collection is Moonrise, Hernandez, NM by Ansel Adams. It is a mounted gelatin silver print signed by the author; one of the photographer’s most iconic and sought after works (Estimate: $40,000/60,000).

There is a wonderful representation of other works of the great photographer Edward Weston including Bodega Coast (1938), signed in initials on board by the author. (Estimate: $4,000/$6,000).

Jumping to another section of the sale are the Fine Art lots. There you will find a number of original drawings such as Miguel Covarrubias’ caricature work: a portfolio of nine original pen and ink drawings along with one pencil drawing (Estimate: $15,000/25,000). Another major lot in this section is the Munkepunke Dionysos: Groteske Liebesgedicht / Grotesque Love Poems by Alfred Richard Meyer that comes with six signed and hand-colored lithographs by George Grosz.
