Rare Books, Autographs & Maps: including final selections from the Estate of Arnold “Jake” Johnson.

The auction will feature Americana, including rare materials relating to War of 1812 naval hero Captain James Lawrence who famously said “Don’t give up the ship!” Other highlights include Cotton Mather’s 1702 Magnalia Christi Americana and McKenney & Hall’s hand-colored History of the Indian Tribes of North America.

Maps feature Ortelius’ world map Typus Orbis Terrarum and the continents with Americae sive Novi Orbis, Nova Descriptio, all from a circa 1575 Latin edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.

Literature includes a first edition of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in the first binding. Autographs include an inscribed copy of John F. Kennedy’s The Strategy of Peace and a fine portrait photograph inscribed by Theodore Roosevelt. Early printing includes Tasso’s sumptuously illustrated 1745 Gerusalemme Liberata and Palladio’s 1726 Architecture, divisee en quatre livres. Final selections from the large sporting library built by Arnold “Jake” include the rare American color-plate work Wild Scenes and Song-Birds, 1855, and William Schreiner's uncommon Sporting Manual: A Complete Treatise on Fishing, Fowling and Hunting as Applicable to this Country, 1841.
