Thornwillow Press in Newburgh, New York, is currently crowdfunding the first-ever fine press edition of Toni Morrison’s award-winning novel, Song of Solomon (1977). The novel will be letterpress-printed and hand-bound in limited quantities of either paper, cloth, half-leather, or full leather, each a testament to traditional bookmaking.

“We are proud to present an edition which will celebrate Toni Morrison’s legacy, and preserve this important book for generations to come,” commented the publisher.

Thornwillow has been publishing handmade books for more than 35 years under the direction of Luke Ives Pontifell. They have produced 100 unique editions in that time (plus bookplates, calendars, broadsides, and more), and, in recent years, have turned to Kickstarter to fund projects like a fine press edition of Octavia Butler’s The Parable of the Sower, The Book of Genesis, and The Great Gatsby.

With just a week left in the Song of Solomon campaign, Thornwillow has met its initial goal, but there’s still time for bibliophiles and collectors to join in at the pre-publication price.
