It's no secret that Edgar Allan Poe had a murky romantic life. Anyone who has taken American Lit 101 knows that he married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. But she wasn't his first love or his last. Elmira Royster Sheldon holds both honors, and it was to this lady that the engagement ring engraved "Edgar" belonged. Elmira and Edgar were childhood sweethearts, but when he left for the University of Virginia, her parents married her off to someone wealthier. Meeting again after the deaths of her husband and his wife, the two rekindled their romance, and Poe presented her with this ring.
