Important Books, Atlases, Globes & Scientific Instruments from the Collection of Nico and Nanni Israel
Sale #18467

This December, Christie’s will be offering a selection of 32 lots, from the private collection of Nico and Nanni Israel. Highlights include: a highly important medieval astrolabe quadrant (the earliest known); the first sea-atlas of the whole world – the Arcano del Mare, arguably the most sumptuous atlas ever produced; the first pocket globe, by the celebrated cartographer of the Dutch Golden Age Willem Blaeu.

Nico Israel was unquestionably the most important rare bookseller of the second half of the 20th century in the Netherlands, the most international and one of the most knowledgeable. In praise of his collection Lord Wardington wrote: “Over the years I have known him at three different addresses in Amsterdam and have seen the most beautiful books. But the most beautiful I have seen have been in his flat where he and Nanny have entertained us to dinner and shown us his own collection of some maps, and globes and nautical instruments: and those books of a rare quality which are the best and which he is going to enjoy for a space before letting some fortunate friend add them to his or her own collection. I have also been privileged to see Nanny’s collection of miniature books which were kept in a box: this maddened me to such an extent that I had a miniature revolving bookcase constructed by Julian Stanley, a furniture maker of rare quality working in High Wycombe, to house them.”

EXHIBITION: Turning Over An Old Leaf: Contemporary Palm Leaf Work in South and Southeast Asia

Oct 25th, 2019 - Jan 19, 2020:

OPENING RECEPTION: Fri, Oct 5th 6pm - 8pm

For centuries, incising text and images by hand on stacks of dried palm leaves was a dominant way of making books in many parts of South and Southeast Asia. This exhibition looks at new directions in palm leaf work now that printed editions on paper have superseded most of the historical functions of palm leaf manuscripts. Contemporary examples of artworks, manuscripts, and book-like structures from India, Bali, Sri Lanka, Burma (Myanmar), and Thailand will explore current practices of palm leaf work, alongside samples of manuscripts from the historical traditions. The works in the exhibition draw upon multiple research trips by Mary Austin and Betsy Davids.

Literature from the Schøyen Collection
Sale #17705

The sale of Shakespeare and Goethe: Masterpieces of European Literature from the Schøyen Collection encompasses rare books and manuscripts from the celebrated national writers of England and Germany. Included in the sale are several major works and true rarities, from the Second Folio of Shakespeare’s collected plays, to a copy of Goethe’s Von Deutscher Baukunst (1773), a landmark essay in praise of German architecture which, excepting reviews in periodicals, was the author’s first appearance in print; from a contemporary manuscript actor’s part from Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I, Act II, to one of the scarcest books in major German literature, Goethe’s Das Römische Carneval (1789), a beautifully illustrated account of his experience of the Roman carnivals; from the annotated prompt copy of Hamlet (1683) used by a contemporary actor, very likely Thomas Betterton (1635-1710), the greatest actor of his day, to autograph poems by Goethe and a signed copy of his exceedingly uncommon list of the autographs in his own collection, privately printed in just 300 copies.
