Magic Collection of Jim Rawlins II Casts Its Spell at Potter & Potter

Chicago — Potter and Potter's early summer auction, featuring the second installment of rarities from the Jim Rawlins collection, offered nonstop surprises and excitement from start to finish. After the hammer fell for the last time, 58 lots realized between $1,000-5,000; 7 lots realized between $5,001-$9,999; and 1 lot broke the five-figure mark. Prices noted include the company's 20% buyer's premium.

Potter & Potter, the Chicago auction house that has until now focused mainly on magic, is officially entering the book biz, with its inaugural books and manuscripts auction on July 8. With a few notable exceptions--e.g., this Lovecraft-Houdini typescript--Potter & Potter has previously focused its efforts on music and movie memorabilia, posters, circus ephemera, and other collectibles.

Whispered about by hopeful collectors and scholars for decades, the manuscript of H.P. Lovecraft's The Cancer of Superstition, commisssioned and co-written by magician Harry Houdini, has finally come to light. It was rather incredibly "discovered by a private collector among the records of a now-defunct magic shop," according to Chicago's Potter & Potter Auctions, which will auction the 31-page typewritten story on April 9.
