RBS Seminar: Exploring Ephemera
Drawing on the remarkable holdings of two Delaware institutions—Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library and the University of Delaware Library—this two-day workshop offers an opportunity to explore the history, production methods, typography, circulation, use, and meaning of ephemera produced from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries in America and Britain. Hands-on study of the physical nature of ephemera will be the main emphasis of the seminar, but the value of the materials for scholarship, teaching, and exhibition purposes will also be considered.

This seminar has been designed to be of interest to curators, collectors, and librarians of all kinds who care for, research, and teach with ephemera collections, but signup is open to anyone with an interest in the topics covered.

Students with varying levels of experience and expertise are welcome. In their personal statements, students should provide a brief description of their interest in ephemera, to help inform the seminar examples and presentations.

As space is limited, signup for the seminar will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage “early bird” sign up before 1 August to improve your chances of getting a seat.

A block of rooms will be available at a discounted rate at the Courtyard Marriott-University of Delaware; transportation will be provided to and from the hotel each day.

Mon & Tues 8:30am – 6pm

Preceded by a group dinner on Sunday, 9 September 6pm – 9pm

The cost to attend the seminar is $500.

The Erwin Tomash Library on the History of Computing

In its scope and subject matter, Erwin Tomash’s collection is unlike any other to have been offered at auction. The library represents a lifetime’s fascination with the development across the ages of the modern-day computer, including calculation, astronomy, navigation, mensuration and related subjects. It ranges from medieval and renaissance works on arithmetic, finger-reckoning and the abacus, to the birth in the twentieth century of theoretical and practical computer science under Alan Turing. On the way, it encompasses major breakthroughs in the measurement of space and time by Apianus, Galileo, Kepler and others, the development of complex logarithmic, volumetric and trigonometrical calculations, and early and later scientific instruments such as sectors, slide-rules, astrolabes and quadrants, including Napier’s bones and Babbage’s famous difference engine.

The auction, taking place over two days, will be the inaugural sale in our new purpose-built gallery in the Aeolian Hall, Bloomfield Place.

International Symposium: Photography & China
Photography was introduced to China during the mid-nineteenth century as a brand new technology. In less than two hundred years, it has become one of the most popular daily practices and a prominent medium of artistic expression in the country, changing the ways in which people observe, record, and share the world around them. Although it is a newer creative practice, unique, long-standing Chinese traditions and aesthetics continue to shape the trends of photography in China.

This one-day symposium features leading scholars, industry experts, photography collectors, and artists from both the U.S. and China. Topics vary from traditional Chinese aesthetics and nineteenth-century Chinese photography to contemporary masters and cutting-edge photographers. There is also a special focus on the development of silver gelatin printing in relation to its use in landscape photography.

The Photography and China symposium is presented in conjunction with China Institute Gallery’s current exhibition Art of the Mountain: Through the Chinese Photographer’s Lens. The morning session is dedicated to the memory of Wang Wusheng, a master photographer best known for his black-and-white landscape photography of Mount Huang.

The Poster Sale

The Poster was one of the earliest forms of advertising, designed to be eye-catching and displayed on walls in public spaces to promote events such as art exhibits, musical performances and film, as well as promoting political propaganda and social messaging. The invention of lithography in the 19th century allowed for mass production of color posters and produced some of the most iconic lithographic posters by Jules Chéret, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre Bonnard. Posters were used for political propaganda and recruitment during WWI and WWII in Europe, America, and the Soviet Union, and by the Soviets during the Russian Revolution and the Bolsheviks during the civil war that followed. Posters became ubiquitous in the mid-20th century, used to advertise everything from travel destinations to lingerie. On September 28, we will offer a large selection of posters including early 19th century lithographic works by Bonnard and Toulouse-Lautrec, signed exhibition posters by Picasso and Gromaire, early French exhibition posters, and many gallery posters from the 1930s through the 1980s. Also included will be Russian posters by Mikhail Dlugach and Alexander Rodchenko.

We accept live online bidding and absentee bids for this sale.
