The Big Book: The Original Working Manuscript of Alcoholics Anonymous

The original typed working manuscript for The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is back on the auction block.

The 161 typed pages are filled with hand written edits by the founders, some by William Griffith Wilson, aka, Bill W. It belonged to Lois Wilson, Bill’s widow. It is one of the best selling books of all time, over 30 million copies have been sold since 1939. It has been translated into 43 languages. The Library of Congress ranks it the number one non-fiction book that shaped America.

In “The Book That Started It All,” a facsimile edition of this manuscript published by Hazelden, an essay succinctly states the extraordinary importance of the present manuscript: “Amid the wealth of literature on Alcoholics Anonymous, you have in your hands the greatest treasure of all, the beginning of it all, the charter of the Fellowship.”

Walker Evans Photographs from the Harry Lunn Gallery

As a pioneer of the documentary tradition in American photography, Walker Evans is one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Evans ’s principal subject was the vernacular—the main streets, shop signs, and rural architecture that reflected everyday life in America. Photographs in the auction include exhibition, work, and study prints dating from the 1930s to the early 1970s and come from a private Massachusetts collection by way of the Harry Lunn Gallery.

Fine Autograph Music: the Property of Helmut Nanz and Family
Sale #L18415

Sotheby’s is delighted to offer property from one of the finest private collections of autograph music and composers’ letters in Continental Europe: The Property of Helmut Nanz and Family. Included in the sale are autograph music manuscripts by Mozart (for the unfinished the duet sonata K.357/K.497a), Beethoven (a sketchleaf for the quartet op.59, no.3), Paganini, Mendelssohn (the Scherzo op.16 no.2), Spohr (a complete opera), Schumann, Liszt, Bizet, Offenbach, Grieg, Massenet, Debussy, Ravel, Mahler, Strauss (the composer’s four-hand arrangement of Aus Italien), Stravinsky (drafts for “The Firebird”), Martinu (the String Quintet from 1927) and Dohnányi, and the complete autograph manuscript of Richard Wagner’s libretto for Tannhäuser, together with letters by Gluck, Leopold Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and six by Wagner. The Mozart sonata, which the composer probably wrote for himself to play with a female pupil, is remarkable for the designations on the staves, which imply that the players have to play the piece with their hands crossed throughout.

Art Talks: Women in a Golden Age of Artists' Books
Three women who were pivotal in the development of offset-printed artists' books discuss the past, present, and future of the unique visual form and transformative medium.

FEATURING

- Cynthia Marsh, Professor of Art, Founder of the Goldsmith Press & Rare Type Collection at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee

- Rebecca Michaels, Associate Professor of Photography at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia
Patty Smith, artist, printmaker, book artist, and professor of Fine Arts, Printmaking at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia

- Tony White, Florence and Herbert Irving Associate Chief Librarian, Thomas J. Watson Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Artists’ books are works of art that are usually produced in small, limited editions with the goal of creating something that is easily accessible outside of the rarefied spaces of art galleries or museums. As early as the 1950s, artists and publishers began using high-speed offset printing—a highly technical, industrial method that is also used to produce books, magazines, newspapers, and currency—to produce artists' books in color and in large quantities. It revolutionized their production. Cynthia Marsh, Rebecca Michaels, and Patty Smith forged their own paths in this field during the 1970s and ’80s, a time said to have been the golden age of offset-printed artists’ books. But in a field dominated by men, their significant contributions to that era have often been eclipsed.

The Rudolf Spoor Collection of NASA Photographs and Ephemera

Rudolf Spoor covered NASA for Dutch media throughout the middle part of the century. With his press credentials, he had access to the people and facilities of the space program, but Rudolf’s enthusiasm for exploration was as keen as his instinct to collect. Over forty years, Rudolf amassed more than 1,200 original NASA photographs, in addition to collecting NASA publications, souvenirs and other ephemera. Many of his NASA photographs are signed, as is the collection’s centerpiece: a NASA helmet signed by thirty-two astronauts, technicians, and scientists from the program, including Dr. Wernher von Braun, Terry White, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Eugene Cernan, James Lovell, and others.

Americana with Manuscript Material - Travel & Exploration - Cartography
Sale #644

A significant selection of rarities of early Americana, California and the West, travels to the far reaches of the globe, and more. Included are printed books, manuscripts including Presidential autographs, photographs, maps ranging from early 17th century depictions of the great continents to scarce cadastral maps showing urban development of the 20th century, and more. The highlight of the auction is what can justifiably be considered the most important book in the political history of the United States, The Federalist, presenting essays by founding fathers James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, meant to convince state legislatures of the fragile confederation that had just gained independence from Great Britain, to combine in a United States with a common government and purpose under the new constitution.
