Lynge & Søn and Sokol Books Ltd Present “Beauty & Brains”

Lynge & Søn and Sokol Books Ltd are pleased to present Beauty & Brains, a joint exhibition of fine printed books and manuscripts, featuring treasures of literature, history, science, religion, and philosophy, and some of the finest examples of illustration and design. Exhibition highlights include the first illustrated chronicle of world history, the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), early printed editions of Dante and Chaucer,  Newton’s Principia (1687), and early printed maps by Ortelius.

Spanning several centuries, Beauty & Brains draws a line of contrast between paper and pixel that has never been so stark. These are not books threatened by the age of digital facsimile: the craftsmanship at work in each illuminated initial, typeset page, and uniquely gilt binding, is enough to put iPads to pasture and e-books to shame. Between the computer screen and the vitality of pages illuminated by scribes, annotated by readers across the centuries, there’s no competition. But judge for yourself—come and see.
