Glenn Horowitz Bookseller Presents Jonas Wood & Shio Kusaka: Still Life with Pots

Glenn Horowitz Bookseller is pleased to announce Jonas Wood & Shio Kusaka: Still Life with Pots, the first two-person exhibition of this Los Angeles based couple, opening Saturday, May 25, and on view through June 22, 2013. A reception for the artists will be held on May 25, from 6-8 pm.

Shio Kusaka’s porcelain vessels strike a graceful balance between minimalist tenets and homespun craft. Each work is elegantly patterned or engraved with delicate grids, bands, and dots that wrap their unpretentious forms with well-laid compositions.

Jonas Wood is known for painting vibrant, delightfully skewed portraits, domestic interiors, and still lifes. His compositions, based in photographic collage, animate otherwise commonplace vignettes through the use of pattern and geometry.

In this exhibition, Kusaka’s works function both as object and subject. Wood faithfully depicts the ceramics in a number of still life drawings and paintings whose minimal compositions underscore both artists’ use of pattern and decoration. He articulates the multi-dimensional qualities of his wife’s pots by focusing on their silhouettes, open mouths, and shifting surface decorations, simultaneously presenting them as voluminous sculptures and compressed mosaics.

Jonas Wood was born in Boston and lives and works in Los Angeles. He received an MFA from University of Washington, Seattle, WA and has since been the focus of a number of solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Shio Kusaka was born in Japan and also lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her B.F.A. from the University of Washington and has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles and London.

Both artists have participated in numerous group shows throughout the USA and internationally. Together they publish an art book series under the name Wood Kusaka Studios.
