Two titles by the iconic Golden Cockerel Press, founded in 1920 at Whaltham St. Lawrence in Berkshire, publishing works of literary and artistic importance.

King James I. THE FOUR GOSPELS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. According to the Authorized Version of King James I with Decorations by Eric Gill; Golden Cockerel Press, Waltham St. Lawrence, 1931.

One of the supreme achievements of this Press and also undoubtedly Eric Gill's masterpiece of book illustration. 
With 64 wood engraved illustrations and initial letters by Gill. Printed by Robert and Moira Gibbings in Golden Cockerel type (designed for the Press by Eric Gill) on Batchelor handmade paper with special watermark of a dove and the initials G.C.P.  Original publisher's half white pigskin gilt over maize buckram boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe.  Number 295 of an entire edition of 500 copies. Estimate: $15,000

Original proofs of  RUBAYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, Golden Cockerel Press, Waltham St. Lawrence, 1938. Translated by Edward Fitzgerald. Twelve Engravings by John Buckland-Wright.

The original publisher’s mock-up with the title page design in pencil and with Christopher Sandford’s notes and type size instructions to the printer in the margin.  

With a complete set of Original Proofs of John Buckland-Wrights’s 14 engravings with proofs of the text of the 75 quatrains each mounted in special window folders, each print numbered and signed in pencil by Buckland-Wright. Estimate: $4000/5000

Shahn (Ben) THE HAGGADAH FOR PASSOVER - Collotype production by Trianon Press. Trianon Press, Paris & London, 1966. With a Translation, Introduction and Notes by Cecil Roth. Produced and Published by the Trianon Press, Paris & London.

This edition first edition of the Haggadah for Passover, copied and illustrated by Ben Shahn consists of 292 copies each bearing the artist’s signature and cypher on the frontispiece.

Unsewn as issued in lettered parchment wrappers with a glassine cover. The extra suites of colour plates, uncoloured plates and guide-sheets and stencils and the proofs of the frontispiece are contained in brown paper folios and housed in an oatmeal cloth portfolio with ties. Together in a gilt-lettered parchment-covered fall-down-back box with silver-gilt clasps.

A very good copy.

The reproduction in facsimile of the Artist’s original was done in Paris under his supervision. The illuminated pages were reproduced by collotype and hand-stencil in the workshop of MM. Hourdebaigt and Crampe under the direction of Trianon Press (France). Collotye was also used to reproduce the illustrations of ‘An Only Kid’. The frontispiece and title-page were drawn by the Artist and printed in original lithography from stones by the Imprimerie Mourlot, with additional colours applied by hand through stencils.

The book was designed by the Artist with Arnold Fawcus, and produced and published in France by the Trianon Press, Château de Boissia, Clairvaux, Jura, and 125 avenue du Maine, Paris. Estimate: $4000/5000

Stephen King : CARRIE; Scarce 1st. UK Edition in Fine Condition, New English Library, London, 1974. King's desirable first book. This UK edition - one of only 600 copies printed is far scarcer that the US edition and is arguably King's scarcest trade edition. Estimate: $1500

J.D. SALINGER: THE CATCHER IN THE RYE; Hamish Hamilton, London, 1951, 1st UK edition, 8vo. The first UK edition of this landmark American novel and one of the most important novels of the 20th century, published in the same year as the US edition. Estimate: $1500

Chinua Achebe: Things Fall Apart; Heinemann, London, 1958. ; Rare Proof of 1st edition in dw. The rare uncorrected proof copy of the 1st. edition of this landmark novel, arguably the most important work of fiction to come out of Africa.  Estimate: $3000/4000

Complete Set 5 Vols. with ORIGINAL EXPRESSIONIST GRAPHICS, published by Klinkhardt & Biermann, Leipzig 1920-1924, 1st edition, very good condition, size 4to. 

A complete set of the 5 Volumes of this very scarce and highly important Expressionist work which contains 32 original graphics, mainly in the form of lithographs, woodcuts and linocuts. Uncommon as a complete set.
Original graphics by: VOLUME 1: Pechstein, Nitsche-Nitsche, Cuchartz, Weber, Morgner, Eberz, Feininger and Waske. VOLUME 2: Campendonk, Heckendorf, Matare, Grosz, Achmann and Viegener. Jack O’ Connor: Autograph Letters on hunting. In 1937 Jack O’Connor wrote his first article for Outdoor Life. In 1941 he became their Gun Editor and that career would last almost 50 years. During that time he became known as the “Dean of Outdoor Writers.” Later in life he worked at Peterson’s Hunting magazine. Early in his career he became close friends with John Jobson (another outdoor writer) and a correspondence started which lasted for about 1/3 of Jack’s active writing period (this includes both the magazine articles and books). Jack wrote to Jobson about things he would never put into print and many of them are indeed as colorful as his life. Almost 300 letters have been catalogued in Jack O’Connor Catalogue of Letters. Estimates from $95 - $125
