Alternate Ending <i>Gone With the Wind</i> Script for Sale at Heritage Auctions
DALLAS—More than 100 years of Hollywood rarities, from Brad Pitt's iconic leather coat from Legends of the Fall (est. $10,000+) to a rare, alternate ending script from Gone With The Wind (est. $1,000+) spotlights Heritage Auctions' Aug. 23 Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature Auction, Aug. 23, 2014, in Beverly Hills.
The auction is a trove of behind-the-scenes treasures from the most beloved motion pictures ever made, including two pre-production concept paintings from The Wizard of Oz (est. $7,000+ each), one which depicts an early character concept for The Scarecrow and another which shows Dorothy on the Yellow Brick Road with two "Munchkins," (est. $7,000+ each).
"We have many wonderful lots in this auction," said Margaret Barrett, Director of Entertainment & Music Memorabilia at Heritage. "This sale has costumes, documents, star autographs, and other Hollywood-related items that would be the cornerstone of any collection."
Collectors have a rare opportunity to own a piece of history from one of the 20th century's best films, Casablanca, as a wicker chair from Rick's Cafe Americain, in which Humphrey Bogart demands to hear "As Time Goes By," crosses the block (est. $4,000+).
In addition to the leather jacket worn by Pitt in his breakout role, a selection of important screen-worn costumes includes a jacket worn by Jack Nicholson in the 1974 Paramount neo-noir Chinatown, the role that garnered him an Academy Award nomination for leading actor (est. $8,000+).
A 1989 oil painting signed by Frank Sinatra (est. $10,000+) leads a hot selection of star-signed memorabilia, including many autograph books filled with countless celebrity signatures, like one that has autographs of blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe and her then husband Jo DiMaggio, (est. $1,600+). A Judith Leiber purse autographed by Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence and used by her at the award show (est. $800) and a cache of fascinating, never-before seen private correspondence between Katharine Hepburn and her personal secretary Emily Perkins (est. $800), are both sure to generate intense collector interest.
Additional highlights include:
- A Certificate of Incorporation for the Sunset Motion Picture Company, 1912, a rare legal document from the dawn of Hollywood (est. $1,000+).
- A prop flying saucer from the 1960 Jerry Lewis vehicle Visit to a Small Planet, signed by cast and crew (est. $1,000+).
- A pair of sepia photographs of Rudolph Valentino by Russell Ball (est. $800+).
