Lindisfarne Gospels Print

In terms of sheer bibliographic beauty, you’d be hard-pressed to beat the Lindisfarne Gospels. The gorgeous medieval manuscript was richly illuminated and decorated by the Irish monk Eadfrith at the end of the seventh century. After remarkably surviving the Viking raids of the Middle Ages, the Gospels were eventually absorbed by the British Library where they remain a collection highlight today. The BL shop now offers fine art prints of pages from the Gospels, in seven sizes. Seen here is the incipit page from the Gospel of John. Bookworms will dig this faux-leather clutch from the shop at London’s Natural History Museum. Fashioned in the shape of a book with brushed gold corner protectors and floral detailing, this zippered purse achieves a chic antiquarian book look, brandishing a title, Observations of a Night Owl; an author, Arthur M. Lewis; and a printed page design inside. Shoulder and wrist straps included; measures 23 x 16 x 6 cm. £45/$59

The image etched on this dinner plate, for sale at the Morgan Library & Museum’s shop, is of Van Gogh’s bedroom in Arles. The sketch appears on a letter Van Gogh wrote to Gauguin on October 17, 1888 in which Van Gogh described the painting he was working on: “I have done, still for my decoration, a size 30 canvas of my bedroom with the white deal furniture that you know. Well, I enormously enjoyed doing this interior of nothing at all. Of a simplicity à la Seurat.” Incidentally, to promote its exhibit of the three painted versions of Van Gogh’s bedroom earlier this year, the Art Institute of Chicago constructed a replica of la chambre and rented it out for $10 a night on Airbnb. $35

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service. Commemorate this historic centennial with a signed, four-color silkscreen print from the National Parks series by graphic artist Michael Schwab. Schwab’s bold and striking designs celebrate America’s national parks and monuments including Muir Woods (pictured here) with its stunning old growth coastal redwoods. The Muir Woods print would be a particularly appropriate (and literary) choice in 2016 as the national monument was named in honor of Scottish-American naturalist and writer John Muir, who spearheaded the early environmental movement in the United States. $150
