On the Shoulders of Giants: Newton, Darwin, Einstein, Hawking
Sale #16449

‘If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants’, Sir Isaac Newton once wrote of his extraordinary scientific achievements. This sale pays tribute to four brilliant minds – Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking – whose discoveries definitively shaped our understanding of the universe. Lots range from a manuscript by Newton exploring his fascination with alchemy to letters by Darwin discussing natural selection and an offprint of Einstein’s great paper on general relativity. The sale concludes with a remarkable group of lots from the estate of Professor Stephen Hawking, including the original typescript of his thesis, a selection of his medals and awards, and a signed (with a thumbprint) copy of A Brief History of Time. The final lot of the sale, a wheelchair used by Hawking, is sold to benefit the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

11th Annual Schoenberg Symposium
Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age: IIluminations: Manuscript, Medium, Message

Manuscript illumination has often been considered in relation to the texts it accompanies, but rarely in terms of its interplay with other artistic media. Historically, however, the technique was closely associated with other forms of artistic expression and served as a crucial point of contact and transfer for visual motifs across space and time. The goal of this year’s symposium is to examine cases of intermedial exchange through the lenses of technique, style, iconography, social context, and cultural geography, while also posing broader questions about the deep connections between the craft of illumination and other arts more widely. Of special interest will be insights gained from the technical examination of works in different media, new comparisons made possible by digital technology, and the discovery of linkages once obscured by strict historiographical divisions

The program will begin Thursday evening at 5:00 pm on November 15, 2018, at the Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central Library, with a keynote lecture by Professor Susie Nash of the Courtauld Institute of Art. The symposium will continue November 16th-17th at the Kislak Center of Special Collections, Rare Books, and Manuscripts.

Registration is $35 ($10 for students with valid student ID)

Hebrew Printing in America: The
Complete Collection formed by the late Yosef Goldman

Together with Important American Autographed Letters

Over a period of decades, Goldman, a bookman par-excellence, indefatigably consulted dozens of libraries in his quest to form his remarkably detailed two-volume Catalogue, comprehensively documenting Hebrew printing in America. Of the 1,208 entries that comprises the survey, some 85% came to reside in Goldman’s personal library. This is the collection that will be offered here for sale, as a complete single unit.
It is by far, the single largest and most comprehensive holding of such material worldwide; a truly extraordinary contribution to Jewish history and Hebrew bibliography.

The Auction will also feature 35 lots (numbers 175-209), all stemming from Goldman’s personal collection, comprising important Autograph Letters written by the leading figures of 18th- and 19th-century American Jewry, including:

Solomon Nunes Carvalho
Warder Cresson
Rebecca Gratz
Bernard Illowy
Gershom Kursheedt
Isaac Leeser
Jacob Mordecai

Guernsey's Auctions - Asherwood
A monumental, unreserved auction of the contents of Asherwood, one of America’s most prominent homes.

Situated on more than a hundred acres in Carmel, Indiana (ranked among the nation’s best places to live by many publications), the 50,000-square-foot mansion, massive second home and private golf club house (the grounds include two golf courses) were generously donated to the Great American Songbook Foundation by Bren Simon, wife of the late respected commercial real estate developer Melvin Simon. The auction event and preceding preview dates will provide first-time public access to the fabled estate.

Hundreds of ornate examples of antique and bespoke 20th-century furniture, furnishings and decor, substantial works of art, Oriental rugs and countless smaller objects, virtually all in pristine condition, will be sold. All of the approximately 1,000 lots being sold will be offered without minimum reserve. In addition to these 1,000 regular auction lots, a separate section of the event will be devoted to selling a substantial portion of Asherwood’s vast library of antique books.

Behind imposing entry gates, at the end of a majestic tree-lined drive, the Asherwood home and surrounding gardens are nothing short of breathtaking. Some say it would cost upwards of $100 million, and many years’ time, to duplicate this remarkable property today. For those who appreciate richly appointed furnishings, this auction will be like no other.

Sotheby’s is thrilled to announce that in the year of the centenary of his birth, the Nobel Prize, papers and personal research library of the brilliant, inspiring, and much-beloved theoretical physicist Richard P. Feynman will headline our second annual History of Science & Technology auction this November 30th in New York. The group is led by the Nobel Prize – including its associated presentation materials – that Feynman shared in 1965 with Julian Schwinger and Shin’ichiro Tomonaga “for their fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics.” The offering also features a remarkable and enlightening collection of manuscripts spanning the full length of Feynman’s career –from his early days at Los Alamos and Cornell though his final days at Caltech, and includes topics such as the atom bomb, QED, Nanotechnology, Computing, and much more. It is the only known collection of manuscripts by Feynman to exist outside of the archive at Caltech, where Feynman taught for nearly 4 decades.

The History of Science & Technology sale will also include books & manuscripts, scientific & technological instruments, original artwork, and other artifacts spanning from the 16th–21st centuries in categories ranging from physics, mathematics, and cryptography, to medicine, biology, computing, and astronomy. Included is a single owner collection of magnificent 15th-19th century books & scientific instruments including early astronomical treatises and celestial atlases, many hand-colored, and spectacular planetary models, including armillary spheres, orreries, telluriums, and more. The breathtaking work of Neuroscientist-turned artist Dr. Gregg Dunn and paper sculptor Rogan Brown will also be included, in what will be an auction debut for both of these highly talented and totally original artists.

Northampton Book and Book Arts Fair
The region’s leading used & antiquarian booksellers and fine letterpress printers, book binders, paper makers, and artist book makers will be showcased.

In addition to an exhibition and sale, on November 30th at 4pm, the fair will feature a round-table discussion with curators of special collections from the 5-College libraries, at Graham Hall auditorium, adjacent to the Smith College Art Museum. “There is no end to the designs, illustrations, materials, texts, genres, and fascination of fine press books. For more than 150 years, they have been produced--and seriously collected. This round-table will look at private and institutional collecting of these amazing books,” says moderator and rare book librarian Sidney Berger. An opening reception will follow at the Campus Center Wilson Atrium.
