Houghton Library: Who Cares? A 75th Anniversary Symposium
This year Houghton Library, Harvard University’s primary rare books and manuscripts library, marks its 75th anniversary. We’ve acknowledged the occasion in many ways, but with this symposium we seek to resist the themes of comfortable reflection, appreciation, and celebration that attend anniversaries. Instead, we intend to examine our legacy, mission, and our path forward through the lens of the question: who cares?

More than a provocation, this question is an earnest interrogation of roles and responsibilities of special collections and archives in an ever-shifting landscape. Who cares for special collections? Why do we open our doors? How will we go on? These questions have no fixed answers, consensus is unlikely; it’s this uncertainty we welcome as we engage in substantive, productive conversation. To that end, we’ve invited speakers and panelists who connect to our collections in a range of ways – as creators and collectors, readers and interpreters, colleagues in cultural heritage from around the world – and asked them to grapple with these questions.

Bibliography Among the Disciplines Conference
This four-day international conference will bring together scholarly professionals who are poised to address current problems pertaining to the study of textual artifacts that cross scholarly, pedagogical, professional, and curatorial domains. The conference will explore theories and methods common to the object-oriented disciplines, such as anthropology and archaeology, but new to bibliography. The Bibliography Among the Disciplines program, supported by Rare Book School and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, aims to promote focused cross-disciplinary exchange and future scholarly collaborations. The project will culminate in 2019 with a volume of essays contributed by conference participants. Both the conference and subsequent volume will seek to build on the ongoing series of symposia conducted by Rare Book School’s Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in Critical Bibliography, established in 2012 through funding from the Foundation.

Conference registration is limited to 300 participants. Conference sessions will include both traditional and innovative formats: plenary addresses, papers, short presentations, roundtables, and working groups. All program slots for presenters have now been filled, but we warmly invite registrations from anyone who wishes to attend the conference to hear the talks and participate in the discussions. The conference will also include hands-on bibliographical workshops and site visits to local special collections, by pre-registration.

INK FAIR LONDON: Rare Books & Art
WITH AN EMPHASIS ON LUXURY AND QUALITY.

Held at 2 Temple Place on London’s Embankment, an extraordinary and beautiful Gothic mansion and one of the capital’s best kept secrets, INK Fair London brings together 30 of the most significant and respected European and American dealers in rare books, art works, and manuscripts, for a three-day event that promises to be the highlight of every collector’s year.

2 Temple Place is a magnificently eccentric fin-de-siecle residence, built by newspaper and property magnate William Waldorf Astor to house his family and his art and book collection. It might almost have been designed with INK LDN in mind. Its opulent interior is a bibliophile’s delight, boasting a treasure trove of literary references.

These include a frieze of 80 Shakespearean characters, a main staircase featuring mahogany carvings of The Three Musketeers (and D’Artagnan), statues of Rip Van Winkle and Hester Prynne and a series of silver gilt panels depicting the women of Malory’s Morte d’Arthur.

The building also has links to a more contemporary cultural phenomenon – 2 Temple Place is where the marriage of Lady Rose and Atticus Aldrige was filmed for Downton Abbey.

It would be hard to find a more fitting home for this exciting and prestigious book fair.

Fine Autograph Letters and Manuscripts from a Distinguished Private Collection. Part 1: Music

Sotheby’s is honoured to offer for sale fine and important music manuscripts and letters from a distinguished private collection, amassed in the first half of the twentieth century, and unknown and inaccessible since then. It contains a large number of new, unpublished and unrecorded manuscripts including an autograph canon by Beethoven, “Ewig dein”, reported in the 1860s but thereafter untraced, leading modern scholars even to doubt its existence. There are also unrecorded music manuscripts by Chopin, Bellini, Verdi, Schumann and others. Most remarkable is a series of thirty-five mainly unpublished letters by Verdi to one of his most important collaborators Salvatore Cammarano, about composing Il trovatore, Luisa Miller and other operas. There are also music manuscripts by Brahms and Mendelssohn, letters by Haydn, Gluck, Paganini, Berlioz, Rossini, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Mahler and Puccini and many exceptional signed photographs.
