The Art Collection of Lauren Bacall Previews at Bonhams

laurenbacallapartment.jpg

New York—The extensive art collection of the late acclaimed actress, Lauren Bacall, will go on view to the public at Bonhams’ Madison Avenue galleries from 25-30 March inclusive (10.00-17.30) before being auctioned on March 31 and April 1.

Accompanying the sale is the lavishly illustrated auction catalog, a collector’s item in its own right. Numbering more than 374 pages and containing over 740 lots, the catalog includes numerous quotes by the actress, footnotes, vintage photographs and views of various rooms of the legendary Dakota apartment that overlooked Central Park.

Entry to the preview exhibition is by catalog only. Entry to the sale is by catalogue purchase and sale registration. Priced at $50 for domestic buyers and $70 for international buyers (shipping extra) the catalog will admit two people. A hard-bound collector’s edition will also be available for $100 plus shipping.

The Lauren Bacall Collection illuminates the extraordinary, instinctive taste of this most accomplished of actresses. Jewelry, faience, majolica, provincial furniture, tribal works of art, prints, and paintings, all testify to her intuitive collecting sensibility. Many of the items to be auctioned graced the Los Angeles residence which Bacall shared with her first husband, Humphrey Bogart; her former country home in Amagansett, New York; and her final residence in New York’s famed The Dakota, overlooking Central Park, which she shared with second husband, Jason Robards until 1969.

Bonhams will also be hosting a lecture presented by Christina Frank from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York (FIT) on Sunday, March 29 at 2 pm. FIT was the recipient of a generous gift of more than 700 pieces of couture donated to the institution by Ms. Bacall during her lifetime. The exhibition, Lauren Bacall: The Look, will take place at FIT from March 3 to April 4, and will contain selections from Bacall’s personal wardrobe, as well as from her roles on stage and screen. The lecture at Bonhams will discuss the exhibition’s pieces and Ms. Bacall’s own distinctive style as well as her relationships with several of her favorite fashion designers. To attend the lecture at Bonhams’ Madison Avenue gallery, please RSVP as soon as possible as space is limited. Please call +1 917 206 1658, or email events.US@bonhams.com.
