SELLING EXHIBITION
The late Gerald Kornblau's fascination and interest in vernacular photography started over 50 years ago when he began photographing while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. When some of his pictures were used to illustrate a National Geographic article in May 1953 entitled "The GI's and the Kids of Korea,” he realized the importance of photography and started on his life-long love affair with the medium. As one of the pioneers in the Folk Art field starting in the late 1950's, Gerry knew photography would be an immerging area of Folk Art. His private collection grew over the years and covered everything from circus performers to trades people. His wide sweeping eye helped form one of the largest collections o f vernacular photography, some of which is now in institutions such as the Smithsonian, The Museum of New York and ICP.

30th IMCoS Symposium: 500 Years Mercator
Early Cartography in the Habsburg Empire,
and Commemoration of Mercator's 500th Birthday

The symposium will focus on Mercator and the influence he experienced from the age of discoveries together with his place in the Habsburg Empire which flourished at that time. Many of the maps and globes produced during this period were highly prized for economic, military and diplomatic purposes and so were often kept secret. At the same time international relationships, scientific developments, philosophy and religion influenced the globe and map makers and vice versa.

Beautiful Evil: The Challenge of Helen of Troy
Ruby Blondell

The ancient Greeks believed that female beauty was linked intrinsically to bad character, starting with the first woman, Pandora, created by Zeus as a "beautiful evil." Therefore Helen of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world, was in her very nature the most destructive. Classicist Ruby Blondell explores Euripides' "Helen" and the magnitude of the task that the playwright set for himself when he took on the challenge of defending her. Blondell discusses how he defied these preconceptions to present the fantasy of a Helen who is a paradigm not only of beauty but of female virtue.

14th Annual Arts & Crafts Conference
The Arts & Crafts Movement in Philadelphia

Initiatives in Art and Culture’s 14th Annual Arts and Crafts conference takes place in Philadelphia and environs, and marks the 100th anniversary of the death of architect Frank Furness. The conference explores the area’s distinctive Arts & Crafts expressions, among them, Will Price’s Rose Valley community, which he called, “a poor sort of heaven, a good sort of earth.” The region’s artistic activities were infused with a practical Quaker sensibility, which evolved to embrace industrial design.
