| August 16, 2012 | "Unpacking My Library: Writers and Their Books" and "How to Do Things with Books in Victorian Britain"
...with Leah Price, professor of English at Harvard University.
This visual presentation delves behind the scenes to the research that led to the author's new books. Unpacking My Library uses interviews and photographs to explore the bookshelves of 13 favorite novelists and the stories behind their lifetimes of reading and writing. How to Do Things with Books in Victorian Britain traces the longer history of readers’ ambivalent relationships with the books that they read and own, buy or borrow, and hide or hoard, from the history of the coffee table book to the future of digital media. 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Mid-Manhattan Library 455 Mid-Manhattan Avenue (at 40th Street) Manhattan, NY

SELLING EXHIBITION
The late Gerald Kornblau's fascination and interest in vernacular photography started over 50 years ago when he began photographing while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. When some of his pictures were used to illustrate a National Geographic article in May 1953 entitled "The GI's and the Kids of Korea,” he realized the importance of photography and started on his life-long love affair with the medium. As one of the pioneers in the Folk Art field starting in the late 1950's, Gerry knew photography would be an immerging area of Folk Art. His private collection grew over the years and covered everything from circus performers to trades people. His wide sweeping eye helped form one of the largest collections o f vernacular photography, some of which is now in institutions such as the Smithsonian, The Museum of New York and ICP.
